Il meurt le 11 avril 2007 à New York des suites d'une blessure crânienne consécutives à une chute.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il s'est engagé dans l'armée américaine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a participé à l'offensive des Ardennes, a été prisonnier de guerre à Dresde et a subi le bombardement de cette ville par les alliés. Ces expériences ont été décrites dans Abattoir 5. A son retour aux États-Unis, il épouse Jane Mary Cox et se lance dans des études d'anthropologie à l'université de Chicago.Il se tourne ensuite vers le journalisme et exerce différents métiers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il crée, à l'occasion, le personnage de Kilgore Trout, auteur de science-fiction des plus ringards, clone parodique de l'auteur. Il apparaîtra dans plusieurs romans et finira par obtenir le prix Nobel dans Le Breakfast du champion. L'écrivain Philip José Farmer l'introduira dans le monde réel en publiant sous ce pseudonyme le roman Venus on the half-shell (Le Privé du cosmos).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Num &lt;a href="http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/4953/kv_decency.html"&gt;outro lugar&lt;/a&gt; podemos ler:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre  style="font-family:georgia;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;...the author seems fairly enthusiastic over the idea  of "folk societies," tribal  sorts of&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;communities which were the foundation for the monstrous global civilization we deal&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;with  today (and  in which  many people  feel alone,  unknown, or&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;inconsequential);  the  type of  tribal societies  which the human  race evolved  to its&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;current state  living in. During his 1971  address  to  the  National  Institute  of Arts&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;and Letters, Vonnegut  drew  attention  to  an  article  written by his former&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;anthropology professor  at the University of  Chicago, Dr. Robert Redfield,  which&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;was  published   in  The  American  Journal  of Sociology in  1947.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The article,  titled "The Folk  Society," put forth Dr. Redfield's theory that  these&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"tribes" ran the gamut of possible lifestyles (which is to  say they were extremely&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;diverse in  recreation,  how  they  obtained  food,  etc.)  but also held certain&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;common  characteristics  as   well.   These  values included  respect for  the old, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;those who  were mediums  to the occurrences of the  greatest tracts of time,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;those  who were rich with  memories. No  specific "division  of labor"  was to  be&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;found in these ancient groupings  of people.All members knew the guidelines for&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;survival, and met them or died. This knowledge (or  acquired experience)  was&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;garnered  by all  members from all other  members.  They  were  intimate  people&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;who held the inner relationships of  their particular society in  no low esteem.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Behavior  towards their  fellow tribesmen  was never  impersonal.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Vonnegut then went on to supplement Dr. Redfield's theory with  his own  belief&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;that  we are  chemically, emotionally,  and psychologically engineered to live  in&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;mini-civilizations such as this.  It is  Vonnegut's faith   in this  theory that  causes the&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;prisoners of  Vonnegut's "sick societies" to  either act more and more  harshly&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;towards  each  other,  or  become  more inward and depressed out  of their&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;confusion:  "This is the  only world I've ever known, so why does it  feel so&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;unnatural and hostile?" or as Vonnegut himself  puts it: "[Our] chemicals  make us&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;furious when we  are treated  as things  rather than  persons... E eis que no domigo passado o editorial do Director do jornal Público chamou a atenção de parte da comunidade antropológica. Tratava-se de um infeliz comentário ao comentário ainda mais infeliz de um antigo Nobel da Medicina, James Watson, sobre uma alegada superioridade da raça branca (ou talvez melhor dizendo, uma inferioridade bio-genética da raça negra) no que se refere ás competências e capacidades intelectuais (a saber, a inteligência). Diga-se em abono da verdade que o próprio Watson tentou redimir-se em declarações ao New York Times (online) declarando posteriormente: “I cannot understand&lt;br /&gt;how I could  have said what I am quoted as having said. Foi publicado inicialmente em 1983. Apresenta um subtítulo extenso: &lt;em&gt;Reflections on the origin and spread of nationalism&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Benedict Anderson (1936- ), nascido na China, educado nos Estados Unidos e em Inglaterra, fez investigação na Indonésia na altura em que se deu o golpe de Estado em 1965 - e pelo seu trabalho conhecido como conhecedor da realidade indonésia - explora os processos que criam as comunidades imaginadas das nacionalidades e dos nacionalismos: territorialização das fés religiosas, declínio dos antigos reinados, interacção entre capitalismo e imprensa, desenvolvimento de línguas vernáculas como suporte dos Estados (lê-se na contracapa do livro).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O autor propõe uma definição de nação como comunidade política imaginada - e imaginada enquanto inerentemente limitada e soberana (1999: 6). É &lt;em&gt;imaginada&lt;/em&gt; porque mesmo os membros da mais pequena nação não se conhecem todos uns aos outros. Por outro lado, é imaginada como &lt;em&gt;limitada&lt;/em&gt; porque até a maior nação possui fronteiras, para além das quais existem outras nações. É também imaginada como &lt;em&gt;soberana&lt;/em&gt; porque nesceu numa época em que o Iluminismo e a Revolução destruiram a legitimidade do domínio dinástico e ordenado por Deus. Finalmente, é imaginada como &lt;em&gt;comunidade&lt;/em&gt; porque as nações assentam sempre numa fraternidade profunda e horizontal.&lt;img src="http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/images/20_1_2004_anderson.jpg" align="right" /&gt; De novo este sinal positivizador da acepção dada ao conceito &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;comunidade.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Comunidade política imaginária, a &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;nação&lt;/span&gt; - e a nacionalidade - é um artefacto criado no final do séc. XVIII, a partir de concepções culturais fundamentais, como a da língua sagrada e do livro, associadas ou desenvolvidas pela revolução de Galileu, a descoberta ou achamento do Novo Mundo, a revolução da imprensa, o desenvolvimento do capitalismo mercantil.
